Get your Teen Ready for Back to School
Summer is coming to an end very quickly and we’re beginning to see “Back to School” signs in our favorite stores and shops. In some areas of the country, back to school begins as early as the 2nd or 3rd week in August, so it’s never too soon to begin getting your children ready for the big day.
Tips for Freshmen
If you’re the parent of a teen entering their first year of high school, here are some tips to help you help them make the transition.
Being a freshman is probably one of the scariest times of a child’s life; they are entering a whole new world filled with older and taller people which can be very intimidating. Then there’s the aspect of learning their way around a whole new school with new teachers and other authority figures.
The best way you can help your child prepare for this transition, is to arm them with a huge dose of self confidence. When your child is sure of themselves, they will be able to walk into their new surroundings with confidence and their heads held high.
You can build up their self confidence by encouraging them in their natural talents and gifts. For example, if your teen good at playing an instrument or a particular sport, encourage them to get involved in band or to get on the team as soon as they can. Most people have a one or two things they are better at than anything else, and you can help them develop and nurture their talents.
Another way to help boost your teen’s self confidence is by letting them know that you love and accept them just the way they are. One of the biggest reasons that teens struggle so much with their self esteem is because they feel like they don’t fit in. But, as a parent you can help reassure your child that they are loveable and acceptable the way they are, which will help them be more confident in who they are no matter what others say about them.
Of course this can be applied to all teens no matter what grade they are entering this fall.
Tips for all Teens Going Back to School
Another way to help your teen get ready for back-to-school is by preparing them mentally for the challenges ahead. School should be fun and when it is, your child is more likely to get interested and stay interested. If they aren’t particularly good at a certain subject in school, you might consider hiring a tutor.
In most high schools, there are tons of different programs and classes your teen can take that will help them stay interested in high school. Encourage and allow your teen to get involved in art, music, drama, the Spanish Club (or other languages). These groups and programs will help bring out your child’s talent and will help boost their self esteem and confidence. It will also help them stay interested in school.
Being a teenager is a lot tougher these days than when you and I were growing up. They are facing new challenges that we didn’t have with the internet, cell phone and texting literally right at their finger tips. However, that same technology can also aid them in their school work. They can look up just about anything they need to know for a research, type it and print it all from the comfort of their own homes. If at all possible, making these resources available to your teen will help them be most successful during their years in high school and beyond.
