How to Start Eating Healthy for Teens

It can be difficult to learn how to start eating healthy for teens. Let’s face it. Most teens don’t have the best eating habits. From sugary sodas to candy bars from the vending machine after school, many teens have become junk food junkies.

Some young people can eat this way and still stay thin. But that doesn’t mean that they’re healthy! Everyone should do what they can do to protect their health by choosing to eat healthier foods.

Teens face many difficulties when they want to start eating healthy — they face a lot of peer temptation, and they’re not usually in control of the grocery shopping and meal planning at home. Still with a bit of persistence, any teen can learn to start eating healthy.

First, you should try to get involved in the meal planning and cooking at home. If your parents are too busy to cook a healthy meal at night, offer to cook dinner a few nights a week. Even if you’re making a simple, but healthy dish, everyone in the family is sure to appreciate it, especially your parents.

Also, ask to help with the grocery shopping. This will give you more influence over the food choices that are available in your home. For example, if your parents tend to purchase a lot of junk food for snacks, you can request healthier fare such as fresh fruits. This also helps you to have food around to start your day with a healthy breakfast.

Don’t forget to pack a lunch to take with you to school. The school’s cafeteria rarely offers the healthiest choices. Rather than buying the greasy food that’s available there, pack yourself a healthy lunch. You may even be able to influence your friends by eating healthier.

Speaking of your friends, another pitfall that most teenagers face is the types of food they encounter when they’re hanging out with their friends. Whether you’re meeting at the movie theater or the local diner, there are plenty of unhealthy, fattening food choices for you to make. Instead of getting the fries or ice cream, try to choose the healthier choices on the menu. If you must choose something unhealthy, try sharing it with a friend.

It can be overwhelming at first when you start eating healthy as a teen. Many people seem to go overboard and forbid themselves from eating any “bad” foods. Unfortunately, this leads to a feeling of deprivation, which often makes you revert to your old habits. Rather than trying to change everything at once, start with making small changes. It’s a lot easier to eliminate one unhealthy thing every week than it is to eliminate everything at once.

You can learn how to start eating healthy for teens if you only remain committed to your renewed health. Remember that eating healthy is a lifelong choice you make.
