Teen Cutting

By: Mary Lutz Category: Teen Emotional Health

You’ve probably heard the term “cutting” but perhaps you don’t know or understand what it is. “Cutting” is when someone who is hurting, sad, angry or depressed, uses a sharp object against their skin, causing it to break and bleed. Girls tend to cut more than boys, and it usually begins in the early teenage years.

Why do people cut themselves?

Those of you, who don’t understand why someone would purposely cut themselves, may have a hard time dealing with someone who does cut. Cutting is a form of release or coping with stressful or hurtful situations for some. One of my best friends used to cut herself, and though we didn’t call it “cutting” back then, she would often resort to slicing up her arms when she was hurting inside. I always thought she was trying to commit suicide, but that was never her intention. She just needed a way to “cope” with her pain. However, if you know someone who does cut their wrists or arms, it may be an indication of suicidal thoughts, so seek professional help immediately.

Even though the cutter may think cutting helps them cope, the exact opposite is true…they aren’t coping with the situation at all. They need to seek professional counseling to help them deal with whatever is going on inside and out.

Signs of cutting

One of the main signs of cutting is the person tries to hide their cuts or scars by wearing long sleeve shirts all the time, even in warm weather. Another sign is withdrawal. Often the cutter will be more withdrawn, afraid other people will find out. If you happen to notice some cuts or scarring on the arms and wrists, the cutter may make up an excuse, like being scratched by a cat, or some other unlikely way. Don’t be afraid to question them, especially if your teen has been depressed, withdrawn, sad, angry or frustrated.
