Expert Advice for College Bound Students
Welcome to Episode # 33!
If you have a student who is in the midst of submitting college applications or even if your student is just starting high school, parents should NOT miss this very informative show about what attributes colleges are looking for in their applicants!
My guest this week is Suzanne Luse, a certified educational consultant from College Expert, and she helps us understand what role parents should play in the college application process, how to encourage your children to make decisions and take initiative when speaking to college representatives, and why your high school student should take four years of math and English classes.
Sue also has a Top 10 List of what colleges deem “most important” on a student’s application. Some of these things might surprise you!
Although Sue’s list is quite comprehensive and colleges are only admitting a fraction of their applicants, try not to put added pressure on your student. It is completely normal to apply to 7-10 colleges rather than 2-3 when we were their age.
If you have any additional questions for Sue or about college in general, please leave a comment below and I will find an answer for you!

Teens should start building their resume in high school, maybe as early as middle school. Competition is tough and the outstanding student has more than just good grades. After school jobs and summer jobs show that a student can be responsible. Volunteer work is an indication they can think beyond their own needs. Travel and social activities that are life experiences make a student look interesting to an institution of higher learning. It’s more than grades. It is the whole package!

She has done a lot of community service, Athletics commitment, and hard classes this year! I just met with her counselor and she agreed that all those things help in the college application process

That is so awesome that you and your daughter are already working on preparing for college. And also wonderful that you have found someone to ask questions about the process. Keep up the awesome work.
